Is McLaren Sandbagging The 720S’ Power Output?

Dyno results recently have show that the new McLaren added to the production stable is possibly sandbagging its’ power output. McLaren makes their power output for their cars a little less confusing than their competitors with using the power figure of the engine in the naming of the vehicle. The McLaren 720S engine is a 4.0-liter twin-turbo v8 that makes 720 metric horsepower at the crankshaft.

The McLaren 720S with a 720 metric horsepower figure blows by the competition of the Ferrari 488 GTB and Lamborghini Huracan. BoostAddicts strapped down a McLaren 720S to a dyno fixure, what the shop found was that the McLaren laid down 700 horsepower to the rear wheel driver British vehicle.

700 horsepower at the wheels is very impressive but when you do the math for drivetrain loss which is normally calculated at 10-15%. If the McLaren was making 710-720 horsepower at the crank than the 720S should make roughly 600-640 at the wheels, but we are seeing numbers closer to 700 at the wheels.
