Fangio’s Ferrari Top Seller at Auction
On Thursday one of the top selling cars at the Sotheby’s auctions was this rare 1956 Ferrari 290MM. The gavel dropped at $28.05 million in New York City.
The Ferrari was originally built for Formula One star, Juan Fangio. Fangio was to compete in this car in the Mille Miglia - a 1,000-mile race through Italy.
The 290MM sets the highest auction price of the year 2015 with its $28.05 million price tag. Previously the record was held by another Ferrari at $38 million. The Ferrari that caught the $38 million dollar prize was a 250 GTO Berlinetta.
Known facts about Fangio’s career is that he is a five-time Formula One champion (1951, 1954-57). He won 24 of 52 races he entered in the world championship. Fangio won these championships with four different teams. He also competed in other racing events such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans, 12 Hours of Sebring, 24 Hours of Spa, and the Indianapolis 500.
