Video shows the dozens of bystanders attempting to lift an SUV taxi after it crashed onto a sidewalk in New York on Monday, pinning two women.
Six people were injured, three of them critically, when the taxi struck a cyclist then veered off into a crowd of pedestrians on the sidewalk in Manhattan’s Flatiron neighborhood at around 1 p.m., according to a Monday briefing from NYPD Deputy Chief John Chell.
Chell said that based on video reviewed by police, the taxi was making a left-hand turn onto Broadway when the collision with the bicyclist occurred. After this collision, the cab slows down, continues to veer to the left, and mounts the sidewalk, Chell said. At that point the cab seems to speed up, striking the two women and pinning them against the wall.
Chell also praised the remarkable scene of New Yorkers attempting to lift the cab off of the women.
All six victims were hospitalized, including the cab driver. Right now, it appears to be an accident, Chell said, but the investigation was ongoing.
